Protests Erupt in Belgium Against U.S. Venezuela Attack

(MENAFN) Demonstrators gathered outside the US Embassy in Brussels on Sunday to protest Washington's military action in Venezuela that resulted in the detention of its president.

Civil society organizations Vrede vzw and Intal coordinated the demonstration, drawing hundreds of participants to the embassy grounds.

Protesters displayed signs declaring "No to war in Venezuela," "Venezuela's oil belongs to Venezuela," and "Free (President Nicolas) Maduro, stop the war."

Vrede vzw released a statement asserting that the US military intervention in Venezuela seeks to seize control of the nation's natural resources, "particularly oil and precious minerals."

"This is a blatant imperialist war waged to impose regime change," the group said.

The organization characterized the US intervention as violating "international law" and urged Belgium and the EU to condemn the military action and launch urgent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.

Venezuela announced early Saturday that the US struck civilian and military facilities across multiple states, subsequently declaring a national emergency.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged the "large scale" strike, and that Maduro and his wife had been captured and flown out of the country. He later said the US will "run" Venezuela until a "safe" transition is ensured, and fix its "broken" oil infrastructure.

President Donald Trump confirmed Saturday's military operation led to the capture of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, vowing to "run" the country and fix its "broken" oil infrastructure.
